Blind Melon Return: Little Rock date added

After the tragic loss of its young singer in 1995, this seminal alternative band is finally ready to begin the second chapter of its career. Last year the band announced its reunification and the addition of a new singer: Travis Warren of Rain Fur RentBack. A year later, the revitalised band returned to the stage for the first time in 12 years with a show in Providence, RI on on October 7th. For the final leg of thetour, Blind Melon will be all over the Southeast in December, including a stop in Little Rock. This will be a great opportunity for old and new fans alike to get a preview of the new Blind Melon record due out in '08.

Yellowcard continue tour without bassist

Despite recent news that bassist Peter Moseley is leaving the band to pursue other endeavours, Yellowcard are still sticking it out on the road in support of "Paper Walls." This is actually the second time Yellowcard has said "goodbye" to Moseley. Back in 2003 Moseley left citing "personal differences" only to be reinstated a few months later. With over 3 million albums sold, it's not surprising that a little line up change here and there can't hold the band back. Anyway, who knows, if history is any indication then it might just be a matter of time until the lineup comes back together again.

If you get your punk pop bands confused, Yellowcard is usually easy to distinguish from others in the genre thanks to their unique use of the violin. Lyrically, they have always been forthright and personal. Singer Ryan Key had this to say about Yellowcard's most recent release:

“If Ocean Avenue was about finding your place in the world and Lights and Sounds is about realizing that you’ve gotten lost, Paper Walls is about what happens when you find yourself again. Before we started this record, everything in our lives was changing. But after a bit of struggling, I finally found a place where I’m comfortable in my own skin. We know who we are and who we want to be.”

Like his hero Dave Grohl, Gillespie decided to step out from behind the drumkit and take on the role of front man for this new project. On the record "Souther Weather," Gillespie plays almost every instruments, showing off his amazing versatility as a songwriter and musician.

Sweden's Blindside prepare for US tour

Having emerged from the hard rock/metal scene of Sweden, BLINDSIDE's first two releases in the U.S. Blindside and A Thought Crushed My Mind- established the band as blistering rock powerhouse that combines both introspective lyrics with an intense, yet melodic sound. These two albums, along with relentless touring, catapulted the band into the hard rock mainstream.

After pressing a self-financed demo in 1996 and selling it at shows, the band debuted in April 1997 in Sweden with their self-titled debut, a collection of old and new songs that serve as a snapshot of Lindskog’s life at the time. The disc was released later that year in the U.S. by Tooth and Nail. “That’s when it felt like a real band for the first time, that’s when we toured the U.S. the first time,” Lindskog says. In 2000, Blindside returned with A Thought Crushed My Mind, a more aggressive album featuring deeper, more vulnerable lyrics. “It went into a darker, deeper place, and was more self-expanding about who I am and what I’m dealing with in my life, and how I relate to the people around me,” Lindskog says. “It’s also about the thoughts that we’re carrying around, and the impact they have on our lives. When that album came out, I remember being really scared because I felt really naked.” Both albums were recently digitally remastered and re-released with four bonus tracks apiece, and featuring special new artwork designed by Lindskog.

With its momentum building, Blindside became the first band signed to Elektra’s 3 Points imprint, and in 2002 released Silence, a tighter, more produced record on which the band marked its musical growth and dabbled in more mainstream fare. The move worked, as two years later, after tours with Hoobastank, P.O.D. and Linkin Park, the band returned with the melodic, meaty About a Burning Fire which hit the top 40 on The Billboard 200 albums chart. Produced by Howard Benson (who also helmed Silence), the album found the band settling into its new dynamic style, sporting the bite of the band’s early hardcore and the polish that comes with time. “If we all like it, then it’s Blindside,” Lindskog says about the band’s songwriting process. “We don’t put boundaries on our music.”

“I think we see music a little bit differently,” Grenehed says, reflecting on the band’s first decade. “When we started, we were just having fun. We’re still having a lot of fun together, but you just want to dig deeper.” Adds Lindskog, “Our friendships have grown stronger over the years, which makes it easier to write music together, because we know how to connect with each other emotionally and musically.” But while the band’s music and relationships have changed and evolved, its goal has remained the same, says Grenehed. “For us,” he says, “it’s always been about trying to get a positive message out there, some kind of hope. That’s the main purpose in both writing music and playing live. That’s the thing that we always come back to.”

Ted Leo adds Little Rock date

Ted Leo began writing music in the late ‘80s as part of the post-hardcore scene. Playing in bands like Citizen’s Arrest and Animal Crackers, Leo cut his teeth as a politically aware, charismatic punk rocker. Leo also has weakness for the mod scene, citing such influences as The Jam, Billy Bragg, and Joe Strummer.

However, on his fifth full-length release, entitled Living with the Living, Leo ventures into new musical territory. Collaborating with Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, Leo indulges in everything from soul and funk to R&B. This record also marks the band’s debut on Touch and Go Records.

The Ataris' big break came in 1997 when Kris Roe passed his demo to a roadie for the band The Vandals. At the time, Kris was just looking for a drummer, but he ended up with a record deal. A few weeks after the fateful encounter, Kris got a call from The Vandal's own label, Kung Fu Records, and The Ataris were off.

Although the band enjoyed a dedicated underground following for many years, it wasn't until 2003 that The Ataris achieved widespread success. The polished tracks on So Long, Astoria came out radio ready, and mainstream audiences raved overThe Ataris cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer."

Since then, the band has come full circle, leaving Columbia Records to start their own label, Isola Recordings. In February of this year they released the follow-up to So Long, Astoria entitled Welcome the Night.

The record debuted at 85 on Billboard has sold over 10,000 copies so far.

Self described as "Motley Crue meets The Cure," The Vanished creates it's own unique sound combining rich melodies and lyrics with rock and roll flare. Theses Texas natives came together when Kirkwood (vocals) and Dallas Perry (lead guitarist) reunited with long-time childhood friends Justin Young (bass) and Phil Helms (drums). In 2006, guitarist Chance Ivey joined The Vanished contributing to a broader landscape.

The Vanished have implemented their fascination of dark, Tim Burton like themes into their music style. "Burton has the ability to combine two very different types of emotions in his films. He has a unique way of melding a storybook ending and gothic twist," explains lead singer, Kirkwood. The band takes this concept and transforms it into their lyrics and music.

The band also takes pride on their live performances. The Vanished want each show to be an experience, rather than just a concert for their fans. "We view the shows like a three-act-play. Just playing the songs live, isn't enough for us. Be it through certain types of lighting, staging and song arrangements, we want the shows to be an experience." The Vanished make sure they take their live shows to the next level. "Our drummer is the only member who has been able to avoid bodily injury during a show. Our first comedian interview! Laughs likely.

The Beardo himself, Zach Galifianakis had a chat with TALive via e-mail this week prior to his show at Juanita's. It appears the piano-tinkering comedian has a lot on his plate for 2007, including two movie appearances and a slot on Coachella! Fans are advised to catch him in the smaller clubs while you still have the chance.

TA Live: We tried to learn more about some of your upcoming film projects, and the posted description of "Visioneers" (thanks, imdb) only describes a comedy involving people who "physically explode." Can you provide any additional insight as to the premise of the film and/or your role in it?
Zach Galifianakis: It is a very interesting little film. I shot it in Seattle and it was my first lead role. It is a story about a guy named George who is a corporate drone who has given up on life. And he tries to find a way out of his pathetic life. Those around him who dare to dream in this kinda Orwellian world end up physically exploding. He tries to dream without exploding. You know your run of the mill people exploding because of daydreaming movie.

TA Live: On the other hand, you'll also be in a more dramatic film, Sean Penn's take on “Into the Wild.” Were you working on these very different movies simultaneously or did you have a break to adjust between the two roles?
ZG: I worked on "Visioneers" right after "Into the Wild" with a little break in between.

TA Live: What age did you start playing piano? When you go to the piano to provide accompaniment for your jokes, what are you playing? Is it a composition created for that purpose, improv, or maybe a piece that someone else composed?
ZG: I started playing around with the piano around 8, I guess. I don't know how to read music so I make it all up. It just adds a bit of backdrop to my stupid little jokes.

TA Live: In the last 5 or so years, Jimmy Fallon has opened up for The Strokes, David Cross opened for Guided By Voices, and you and Patton Oswalt performed with Elf Power at a show here in Atlanta just last year. Who's responsible for making these connections? Are the comedians reaching out to the indie acts, are the indie acts reaching out to the comics, or is it just a creation of record labels and managers to get new people out to shows to deal with sagging album sales?
ZG:There have always been comics opening for music acts. Sinatra often had comics open for him. I don't think it is anything new. I think bands like certain comics and ask them to open for them and vice versa. Annuals, a band I like out of North Carolina are opening for me simply cause I asked them to. I don't think there is any more to it than that.

TA Live: On a similar note, Comedians of Comedy have a slot on the traditionally music-oriented festival Coachella. Are you intimidated performing comedy in front of a large audience of rock fans? Have you had any experience doing stand up in a festival environment? How do you anticipate the reaction will be different or similar than a club show?
ZG: I have done so many different types of shows that it does not phase me really. I cannot wait to perform at Coachella. My Morning Jacket asked me to open for them but we could not work it out. There is always going to be drunks at any kind of show which is a drag.

TA Live: The TV version of the Comedians of Comedy show made it look like you, Brian Posehn, and Patton Oswalt lived in pretty close quarters. Who would you say went the most stir crazy from living in such close quarters and how long did it take for them to crack?
ZG: We all get along quite well. Those guys are nerds and Maria and I are the jocks but we make it work. Brian has the shortest fuse but usually that fuse is put out with a well planned fart joke.

TA Live: As you tour the nation, do you have to adapt your set geographically at all? Besides maybe making reference to local news/events, do you find that sense of humor varies in different parts of the country? Or is a Galifianakis fan a Galifianakis fan no matter where he/she lives?
ZG: I have performed at colleges where I wondered how many of the students ever got out of 4th grade. But as far as regions? I am not too sure. I will research a place a bit to give it a little local flavor perhaps but I don't cater my act because I fear that they audience will not take to it. If they do, wonderful. If they do not you can usually tell by the amount of mouth breathing that is going on.
