Sweden's Blindside prepare for US tour

Blindside
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
Juanitas
Little Rock, AR

Having emerged from the hard rock/metal scene of Sweden, BLINDSIDE's first two releases in the U.S. Blindside and A Thought Crushed My Mind- established the band as blistering rock powerhouse that combines both introspective lyrics with an intense, yet melodic sound. These two albums, along with relentless touring, catapulted the band into the hard rock mainstream.

After pressing a self-financed demo in 1996 and selling it at shows, the band debuted in April 1997 in Sweden with their self-titled debut, a collection of old and new songs that serve as a snapshot of Lindskog’s life at the time. The disc was released later that year in the U.S. by Tooth and Nail. “That’s when it felt like a real band for the first time, that’s when we toured the U.S. the first time,” Lindskog says. In 2000, Blindside returned with A Thought Crushed My Mind, a more aggressive album featuring deeper, more vulnerable lyrics. “It went into a darker, deeper place, and was more self-expanding about who I am and what I’m dealing with in my life, and how I relate to the people around me,” Lindskog says. “It’s also about the thoughts that we’re carrying around, and the impact they have on our lives. When that album came out, I remember being really scared because I felt really naked.” Both albums were recently digitally remastered and re-released with four bonus tracks apiece, and featuring special new artwork designed by Lindskog.
With its momentum building, Blindside became the first band signed to Elektra’s 3 Points imprint, and in 2002 released Silence, a tighter, more produced record on which the band marked its musical growth and dabbled in more mainstream fare. The move worked, as two years later, after tours with Hoobastank, P.O.D. and Linkin Park, the band returned with the melodic, meaty About a Burning Fire which hit the top 40 on The Billboard 200 albums chart. Produced by Howard Benson (who also helmed Silence), the album found the band settling into its new dynamic style, sporting the bite of the band’s early hardcore and the polish that comes with time. “If we all like it, then it’s Blindside,” Lindskog says about the band’s songwriting process. “We don’t put boundaries on our music.”
“I think we see music a little bit differently,” Grenehed says, reflecting on the band’s first decade. “When we started, we were just having fun. We’re still having a lot of fun together, but you just want to dig deeper.” Adds Lindskog, “Our friendships have grown stronger over the years, which makes it easier to write music together, because we know how to connect with each other emotionally and musically.” But while the band’s music and relationships have changed and evolved, its goal has remained the same, says Grenehed. “For us,” he says, “it’s always been about trying to get a positive message out there, some kind of hope. That’s the main purpose in both writing music and playing live. That’s the thing that we always come back to.”

Strippers vs Zombies!

Zombies! Zombies! Zombies!: World Premiere
Thurs. October 11, 2007
AMC Universal Citywalk
Orlando, FL

We are not making this up, people. This could go down as the best event description ever posted on Ticket Alternative:

"A drug experiment gone wrong produces a league of blood-thirsty zombies. It is up to a small band of exotic dancers trapped in a gentlemans club to fight back. Together they must rely on their wits and skills to survive the night, and pray that they don't become victims of the flesh-eating zombies!"

It's the ultimate pairing of sex and gore! According to the official Web site, it looks like this release is going straight to DVD, so this is your one chance to see Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! on the big screen. That is, of course, until it becomes a cult hit.

We've got the trailer here for your enjoyment. Please note, the film is rated R and there are some gruesome clips here...you've been warned. Also, listen for what will surely be the catch phrase of the film: "Them bitches is crack whore zombies!"

Ted Leo adds Little Rock date

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Tues November 6, 2007
Juanitas
Little Rock, AR

Ted Leo began writing music in the late ‘80s as part of the post-hardcore scene. Playing in bands like Citizen’s Arrest and Animal Crackers, Leo cut his teeth as a politically aware, charismatic punk rocker. Leo also has weakness for the mod scene, citing such influences as The Jam, Billy Bragg, and Joe Strummer.

However, on his fifth full-length release, entitled Living with the Living, Leo ventures into new musical territory. Collaborating with Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, Leo indulges in everything from soul and funk to R&B. This record also marks the band’s debut on Touch and Go Records.

There are couple tracks you can stream on Ted Leo's official site:

Pull shapes with The Pipettes!

The Pipettes
Tues Oct. 16, 2007

Vinyl
Atlanta, GA

I am not sure exactly what “pull shapes” means, but I think it has to do with dancing like a fool. You’ve likely bopped along with their latest single (“Pull Shapes”), and maybe even check the radio to see if you ended up on the oldies station. Like the sunny side of Amy Winehouse, these girls also look to the breezy girl group sound of the ‘60s for inspiration.

Actually, The Pipettes consist of more than just the three women you’ve seen posing in polka dot dresses. In total there are seven band members, the reaming four being men who are collectively referred to as “The Cassettes.” The boys usually wear yellow tank tops with their initials sewn onto them, adding to the retro aesthetic.
Thanks to a number of successful SXSW appearances, England’s Pipettes got a record deal with Cherrytree Records, a division of Interscope Records. Cherrytree will release The Pipettes’ debut record October 2nd.

Sneaker Pimps' Chris Corner is IAMX- on tour this fall!

IAMX
Sat. November 10, 2007
Vinyl
Atlanta, GA

What does it mean to be “X?”

The concept began back in 1996 when Sneaker Pimps released their first record, “Becoming X.” Chris Corner, the mastermind behind the band, penned every song, and the record gained international play and critical acclaim. At the time, Sneaker Pimps featured Kelli Dayton up front on vocals. However, after being labeled as “trip hop” and lumped with bands like Portishead and Mazzy Star, Sneaker Pimps felt Dayton’s vocal style was too limiting.

That’s when Corner first moved the forefront. His delicate yet soaring vocals providing a new, raw energy. For those uninitiated, Corner’s vibrant range shares many of the same qualities as Matt Bellamy (Muse).

A decade after Sneaker Pimps, Corner has reemerged, this time proclaiming that he is X. IAMX takes some of the synth undertones of Sneaker Pimps and injects some sort of musical equivalent to Viagra. IAMX oozes with sexual tension, seedy glamour, and seductive rhythms.

In an Austrian television interview, Corner explained that being “X” has something to do with a lack inhibition or restraint. While it isn’t exactly an “act,” it is certainly a persona that he takes on in the studio and on stage. There is an animalistic quality in his performances; for all the dramatic glam theatrics that propels IAMX, Corner is able to rouse audiences with intense emotion.

Just take a look at the behind the scenes footage featured on UK Myspace. You can see his European audiences going nuts at festivals in Budapest, Berlin, Russian and beyond.
IAMX - Behind The Scenes

Add to My Profile More Videos

Even over here in the States where Corner has no major label support, IAMX sold out dates in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Las Vegas in the spring. This success is due in large part to Myspace and his passionate fans. Just look at his Myspace page now, and you’ll see active street teams in almost every U.S. city he is visiting this fall!

So don’t delay on tickets to this upcoming tour. This is a rare chance to see a mesmerizing performer in the luxury of an intimate venue. Word on the street is that the first U.S. cities to sell out on this tour will be rewarded with exclusive IAMX merchandise! So grab your pair early for the chance to own some extra special gifts!
As an added bonus, more good news for American fans! You won’t have to shell out big bucks to have IAMX’s records imported from Berlin much longer. “The Alternative” is due for release in the States this fall as well..

Black Angels on the road again!

The Black Angels
Oct 31, 2007 in Atlanta
Nov 04, 2007 in Washington, D.C.

Psychedelic drone machines Black Angels are back on the road this fall. We had a chat with singer Alex Maas back in March, and he had some great stories to tell about his haunted house, playing almost a million shows at SXSW (we are just barely exaggerating), and what it means to be psychedelic. We are working on getting the podcast up and running once again, and in the meantime I'll work on a transcript of the interview for your reading pleasure. Check back later today or tomorrow!

Here you go!

Fringe: A Unique New Music Experience in Atlanta

Fringe
September 22 & December 1
Redeemer
5185 Peachtree Dunwoody Road

Atlanta, GA

Fringe is about art—about crossing ethnic, cultural, and social divides through music by purposely melding worlds to create something entirely new. Fringe will put gifted composers, musicians, and visual artists together to showcase their talent in a fresh experience of the arts unlike any Atlanta has ever seen. It will blend a cocktail of music and visual arts that will bring back the original, intimate experience of chamber music in an approachable, exciting way—especially for younger audiences weaned on pop music and even poppier culture. The concerts will look something like this: chamber music (classical music played by small groups of musicians) will be the focus of each evening, with performances of some of the most virtuosic music compositions ever written, performed by the best musicians in Atlanta and throughout the country. Unlike the iconic classical music experience of sitting, listening, yawning, and then leaving, each interactive performance will be a swift blend of live music performances, a DJ spinning ambient and electronica, documentary-style videos of the performers and finally, an independent, jury-selected short film.

This blending of art is radically different from what has come before, and we hope it begins to usher in a new era of the classical concert experience—not by talking down to its audience and expecting them to be quiet and behave—but by inviting them in to get dirty and truly experience this great art anew.

The first two concerts Sept. 22 and Dec. 1, and the remaining two will be held in the winter of 2008 (dates TBD).
September 22, »8pm»Fringe’s first concert will be a swift blend of documentary-style videos of the performers, a DJ spinning ambient and electronica, and a screening of an independent, jury-selected short film. The highlight of the evening will be performances of a violin-and-cello duo by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály (a fiery, folksy and virtuosic work) along with the famed Schubert Cello Quintet in C Major.
December 1, 2007 »8pm» Along with a short film screening and other included visual arts, this concert will feature New York harpist Bridget Kibbey, winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, and flutist Julietta Curenton, a duo that has competed and performed worldwide. As described by The New York Times, 28-year-old harpist Kibbey “made it seem as though her instrument had been waiting all its life to explode with the gorgeous colors and energetic figures she was getting from it.” Kibbey has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, among others. She’s been featured on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” as well as on A&E’s “Breakfast with the Arts.”
