Vincent Gallo's RRIICCEE on tour now

Actor/producer/artist Vincent Gallo has a new project with Hole's Eric Erlandson, but I have no idea what it sounds like and, in some ways, neither does the band. Apparently RRIICCEE comes to town with no pre-written material and no plans to ever enter a recording studio. For all intents and purposes the music will all be composed live on stage, and every show will be different. It's avant garde, certainly, but don't call it "improv."
“Improvisation is not a good word for what we’re doing," says Gallo. "It’s more a gesture of composing and performing at the same time, always hoping to avoid musical cliché or jamming. We’ve chosen not to go into a studio in a traditional way like other bands have done in the past: to make recordings, cut them up, dub on them, fine tune and mix them, and then release them as an album, then later, go on tour, pantomiming those recordings over and over each night as a form of cabaret. Instead, for a long time now, we’ve chosen to remain open, to grow and change more naturally, and when we play live, the music is often created during the performance. If we choose to record a performance, the recording itself is only evidence of that creative moment. The purpose of recording then, is to listen back for enjoyment.”
Would you expect anything else from Mr. Gallo? Knowing his fondness for the pretentious it's no surprise that he doesn't subscribe to the conventions of the common musician...Whether this will work to his benefit is yet to be seen, but at the very least you are guaranteed a unique performance! It will be interesting to see what he comes up with and how his performance is received.

RRIICCEE live in Tucson, Arizona ... Dec. 1, 2007 ... 9:30pm
This show was incredible. Packed house (venue owners said largest they've ever had in their space). Every detail of the experience was finely tuned. From the lighting to the stage and the music has to be experienced to understand. it starts almost like a tune-up session and meanders into over an hour-long set comprised of grooves that wind into each other. Vincent moved from his melodic signature guitar sounds to keys and even broke out a wind instrument at one point. Eric was master of the surreal effects with all sorts of twisted feedback rhythms, and knob turning vibes abound. Several moments where he and Vincent fell into grooves that made it very hard not to move around and shake something. Rebecca's trance-like synth maneuvers enveloped every tune with a keen sense of direction while Nikolas drove the beat from soft sweeping patterns into hard-pounding jams and even picked up a flute at a couple points himself. This was art and music as one and the synergy was unmistakable. It's hard to believe that nothing which transpired in the set was preconceived or committed to memory. It all unraveled in that time and space and will never happen again. That is RRIICCEE.
I think the music only stopped about 3 times for air. The crowd was riveted. Most in attendance probably never witnessed anything like it in this area before. Lots of Tucson's artist types came through - that was cool. good times had by all. if you catch the show near you be sure to come prepared for the rare, limited merch on hand (cash only). No mass manufactured factory style gear to be found here. Instead Vincent himself has produced one-off fine art shirts and art prints. I believe that shirts were $15-25 and a very cool ultra rare RRIICCEE art print will set you back $100, but it's fairly large and hand screen printed by Vincent Gallo. The painstaking detail is unmistakable (make sure you look up close!). Black and white hand screened image of the band members individually numbered and signed by each one. I don't believe I've seen anything like it on another tour. I think there's only a small number left so be sure to get these items before the tour is over. Once they're gone ... they're gone. I will try to get a few for the web site store after the tour, but no guarantees.
check out the show in your town, you won't regret it!

I went to this show December 7th at the Rock n Roll Hotel in D.C. One word: B O R I N G.
That pretty much sums it up. It was so SO hard trying to stay awake when they just kept playing the same notes over and over and over. It sounded like a bunch of heroin addicts fumbling around on instruments. At one point, they finally got into a nice little JAM, (yes JAM because thats what they were doing, I dont care if thats not the "word" they like to use) and right when I thought it was going to get good, they brought it back down to that one note they played over and over. Ugh. I was robbed. I would've rather watched paint dry. They didnt even talk to the audience once, not a "hello" or "thank you", because I guess they don't talk to commoners or something. The merchandise was ridiculously overpriced - who's going to pay $50 for a wifebeater with the word "RRIICCEE" on it?? And $100 posters?? Please. Who do these people think they are?? I left the show feeling extremely sleepy and depressed. I wouldn't recommend this show to anyone, unless you get off on feeling sleepy and sad.
Yes, I love it! Good and bad reviews are always welcome. Keep 'em coming for all our shows.
..and $100 posters are you serious?? I knew Vincent Gallo is the epitome of pretentious, but that is absolutely absurd. You just sort of have to laugh about it don't you? Even if the show was a snooze, Gallo is the type people just love to hate. Thanks for the feedback- we'll keep that in mind next time RRIICCEE comes to town.
Went last night. I was skeptical as even the best musicians in the world would struggle to "improvise". They certainly are not the best musicians in the world. It was painful, pretentious, self-absorbed.
There is a reason people prepare for concerts by writing songs or at least improvising over jazz structured compositions.
Those people who did enjoy it I think it was a case of Emperor's New Clothes.
